Surrey temples say yes to $10!

October 15, 2007

Worshippers at three Sikh temples in Surrey gave a big boost Sun Oct. 14 to the campaign to raise B.C.'s minimum wage.

Hundreds of people signed petitions and wore $10 NOW buttons at the events, which were organized by Surrey Newton NDP MLA Harry Bains. Bains also addressed the congregations at the Guru Nanak Sikh Gurdwara, Dukh Nivaran Gurdwara, and Gurdwara Sahib Dasmesh Darbar temples.

Earlier Sunday morning Bains along with NDP leader Carole James, the B.C. Federation of Labour and other politicians and community leaders made the case for a $10 minimum wage in extended coverage on Radio India.

Federation of Labour president Jim Sinclair says the positive reception from the Sikh community in Surrey is a sign of growing public pressure on the Campbell government to give B.C.'s lowest paid workers a long overdue raise
