Federation Condemns Attack on Collective Bargaining, Oppostion Should Form Coalition Government

November 27, 2008

The B.C. Federation of Labour is condemning the Stephen Harper government’s proposal to tear up collective agreements and remove the right to strike for federal public sector workers.

Both proposals were contained in Finance Minister Jim Flaherty’s Economic and Fiscal Statement released in Ottawa earlier today.

“This government bails out bankers at the same time it rips up fairly negotiated contracts it has signed with workers,” says Federation President, Jim Sinclair.  “The Supreme Court of Canada ruled that Gordon Campbell violated charter rights when he tore up collective agreements with Bill 29.  The Harper government is making the same illegal and unconstitutional attack on workers.”

This afternoon more than 1,100 delegates attending the Federation’s 52nd annual Convention in Vancouver unanimously endorsed an emergency resolution condemning the Harper government’s policies.  The resolution also called on the opposition parties to defeat the Harper government.

“It was the deregulation ideology embraced by the Harper government that created the current economic problems, not the salary increases negotiated by these workers,” Sinclair added.  “The opposition parties should defeat this government and form a coalition government that represents a majority of Canadians.”
