Federation urges Prince George residents to vote for an increase to the minimum wage
February 16, 2009
A pamphlet sponsored by the B.C. Federation of Labour, mailed to residents of Prince George-Valemount last week, urges voters to think about BC's minimum wage when they go to the ballot box in this May's provincial election.
"We're going to make sure Gordon Campbell, Shirley Bond, and the BC Liberals can't duck the minimum wage when voters go to the poll on May 12," said Jim Sinclair, President of the B.C. Federation of Labour.
"Bond and Campbell had no problem giving themselves and their top advisers a raise, but refuse to raise BC's minimum wage," Sinclair said. "The simple facts are clear, and we're going to make sure the BC Liberals can't duck their record."
"Gordon Campbell and Shirley Bond won't stand up for BC's lowest-paid workers, so we're asking BC voters to," added Sinclair.
BC has the dubious distinction of being the only province in Canada that did not announce an increase to BC's minimum wage in the last eight years. Likewise, BC is the only province to have decreased the minimum wage when the Campbell Liberal introduced the six dollar training wage at the beginning of their first term in office.
