Federation calls on Canuck fans to support striking Aramark workers

March 13, 2009

VANCOUVER - The B.C. Federation of Labour is calling on Vancouver Canuck fans to support the 700 striking Aramark workers at General Motors Place and not cross the picket line at tonight’s hockey game.

The workers, members of Unite Here! Local 40, have been working without a contract since December and walked off the job this morning.

The workers launched a one day strike today for fair wages, improved benefits, job security and assurances that they won’t be laid off during the 2010 Winter Olympic Games.

“The men and women who serve food and drinks at General Motors Place are dealing with a large multi-national corporation that is trying to squeeze every penny of profit out of its workers, and the fans who go to the games,” says Federation President, Jim Sinclair. “These workers can’t even afford the overpriced food that Aramark sells at events at General Motors Place, but the company is still trying to extract more concessions from them.”

Aramark, a food service multi-national corporation based in Philadelphia, had sales of more than $13 billion last year and recorded more than $566 million in operating profit.
