On to Ottawa Trek 75th Anniversary
Date: Sunday June 6, 2010 from 1:00 pm to 1:00 pm
Commemorative Ceremony and Rally at Crab Park, North Foot of Main Street, Vancouver, where the trek began.
June 2010 marks the 75th anniversary of the 1935 'On to Ottawa Trek', when thousands of young men were inspired to climb atop boxcars and personally deliver their demand for "work and wages" to the source of the problem.
It was a magnificent response to the harsh conditions endured by Canada's depression era unemployed. These same conditions echo around us today.
The event will feature:
- major speakers and great music
- a proclamation by the City of Vancouver honouring the Trek
- the dedication of a historical plaque marking the Trek site
- a modern day soup kitchen
- recognition that 1935's issues: poverty, homelessness, low wages and social injustice are still very much with us
- launch of a further project to create a major public art project honouring the Trek
- a send-off for the On to Ottawa delegation from the 2010 Homelessness Hunger Strike to support a national housing program
