B.C. Federation of Labour Contributes $10,000 to United Steelworkers Burns Lake Fund

January 27, 2012

Vancouver, BC – The BC Federation of Labour is launching a fundraising appeal in support of the United Steelworkers Burns Lake Fund for families affected by the Babine Forest Products explosion, and making an opening contribution of $10,000, Federation President Jim Sinclair announced today.

“Unions have a proud history of standing up for the safety of all workplaces, and a prouder history of standing together in difficult times,” said Sinclair.  “On behalf of our affiliates and our more than 450,000 members, we want to send a clear message to the people of Burns Lake and specifically the employees of Babine Forest Products and their families: we stand with you.”

Sinclair said that in addition to the $10,000 the B.C. Federation of Labour would contribute directly, he expected thousands more to be raised through an online fundraising appeal to union activists and their families.

Announcing the creation of the fund earlier this week, USW Director for Western Canada Steve Hunt said: "Since the tragedy at Babine Forest Products, we have been inundated with offers of support and assistance from other unions and union members all over the province and right across the country.  The labour movement is a family, and union members join all British Columbians in mourning the loss of life and injuries to our brothers and sisters in Burns Lake."

People may also contribute directly to the fund at any Community Savings Credit Union in the Lower Mainland, or by mail to the United Steelworkers at USW District 3 Office, #300-3920 Norland Avenue, Burnaby, B.C. V5G 4K7.  Cheques should be made payable to USW Burns Lake Fund.
