Rally today at the legislature to protest Liberal’s Translink legislation

VICTORIA – Opponents of Bill 36, proposed provincial legislation that will end democratic local control over transit decision-making in the Lower Mainland, will rally at the Legislature in Victoria, Thursday, May 10th to kick off a campaign to stop the Campbell Liberals from eliminating the current Translink board.
Those opposed to Bill 36, which include transit user groups, elected local politicians and unions representing transit workers, say the legislation will:
- be an attack on local democracy;
- open the doors to even more privatization; and
- see elected local politicians on the current Translink board replaced by unelected officials handpicked by Liberal friends and insiders.
The rally features a number of speakers including Vancouver City Councillor Raymond Louie, and NDP Transportation Critic, David Chudnovsky. Louie was instrumental in forging a unanimous decision by Vancouver’s elected officials to oppose the Campbell Liberals’ attack on Translink.

Federation of Labour represents transit and transportation workers in a number of different affiliate unions including: the Canadian Auto Workers, Canadian Union of Public Employees, Canadian Office and Professional Employees Local 378, B.C. Government and Service Employees’ Union, B.C. and Yukon Territory Building and Construction Trades Council, and the Amalgamated Transit Union.
